The Back-to-School Reset Isnt Just for Kids

Posted by August on Aug 20, 2026, 1:29:30 PM

There’s something about the start of a new school year that feels like a fresh start for everyone. After a few months of later nights, vacations, summer activities, and a much more relaxed schedule, August brings us back to routines and a little more structure. While the kids may be the ones heading back to the classroom, I think this time of year is also a great opportunity for parents and families to hit the reset button.

A new school year doesn't have to mean making a long list of resolutions or completely changing your routine. Sometimes it's simply about taking a look at what's working, what isn't, and what could use a little more organization before the busyness of the next few months begins.

Get Your Schedule Back in Order

Summer has a way of making the calendar feel a little less important. Between vacations, beach days, late dinners, and weekend plans, it's easy for routines to go out the window. Once school starts, suddenly everyone has somewhere to be and a time they need to be there.

Taking some time to get the family calendar organized can make a huge difference. Add school events, practices, appointments, birthdays, and other commitments in one place so you can see what the weeks ahead actually look like. A little planning now can help prevent those "wait, we're supposed to be where?" moments later.

Reset Your Spending Habits

Our spending habits can change quite a bit during the summer, too. Maybe you've been eating out more, traveling, spending more on activities, or making the most of those spontaneous summer plans. There's nothing wrong with that, but the start of the school year is a great time to take a look at where your money has been going and make a few adjustments if needed.

Take a look at your budget and think about what your expenses will look like during the school year. Maybe you'll spend less on travel but more on gas, activities, childcare, or after-school expenses. Your budget should reflect your actual life, and when your routine changes, it's okay for your budget to change with it.

Create a Routine That Saves You Time and Money

Getting organized isn't just about making life easier—it can also save you money. Planning a few meals for the week can help cut down on last-minute takeout, packing snacks before heading out can keep those convenience purchases in check, and knowing what's on the calendar can help you avoid unnecessary expenses that come from being unprepared.

You don't have to meal prep every meal or have every minute of the week planned out. Even a little preparation can make those busy school nights feel much more manageable.

Revisit Your Financial Goals

A new school year can also be a good reminder to check in on the financial goals you set earlier this year. We're already more than halfway through the year, so where do things stand? Maybe you wanted to build your emergency fund, pay down a credit card, save for a vacation, or simply get better about tracking your spending.

You don't have to wait until January to make a change. If something isn't working, adjust it now. There are still several months left in the year to make progress toward the goals that matter to you.

Make Room for the Fun, Too

Getting back into a routine doesn't mean summer fun has to completely disappear. Football games, fall festivals, weekend trips, and family activities are right around the corner. Part of resetting your finances is making sure you leave room for the things you actually enjoy.

A budget shouldn't be about saying no to everything. It's about knowing what matters to you and making sure your money supports it.

The start of a new school year is a natural time to reset, not just for students but for the entire family. Getting organized, adjusting your budget, revisiting your goals, and creating a few routines can help make the transition from summer to school a little smoother.

You don't have to overhaul your entire life just because the calendar says August. Sometimes a fresh start is simply taking a step back, getting organized, and making a plan for the season ahead. And if that plan happens to leave a little more room in the budget for the things you enjoy, even better.

From the Farmers Market to the Dinner Table

Posted by August on Aug 13, 2026, 1:01:11 PM

If you’ve been following along, you probably know that I love a good farmers market. A few weeks ago, I decided to turn one of my market trips into a little summer challenge: how much of an entire dinner could I make using ingredients I found there? I shared the process in a reel, and it ended up being such a fun way to shop, cook, and make an ordinary summer evening feel a little more special. It also got me thinking about why I enjoy farmers markets so much in the first place. It’s not necessarily about getting the lowest price—it’s about the experience, knowing where some of your food comes from, and supporting the people in our community who grow it.

Local Summer Favorites You Should Experience Before They're Gone

Posted by August on Jul 30, 2026, 2:53:30 PM

It's hard to believe we're already talking about the end of summer. It feels like Memorial Day was just a few weeks ago, and now school supplies are filling the aisles and everyone's already counting down to fall. While I love a good pumpkin spice latte as much as the next person, I think August deserves a little more credit. There are still plenty of warm evenings, beautiful beach days, and local events to enjoy before summer officially comes to an end.

Christmas in July: Why It's Never Too Early to Think About the Holidays

Posted by August on Jul 15, 2026, 4:39:26 PM

I know... it's only July. The kids are still out of school, it's 95 degrees outside, and the last thing most of us are thinking about is Christmas. But between "Christmas in July" sales popping up everywhere and retailers already advertising holiday deals, it got me thinking about something else—the holidays have a funny way of arriving much faster than we expect.

Your Guide to Fourth of July Fireworks Along the Grand Strand

Posted by August on Jul 3, 2026, 11:57:43 AM

There's just something about the Fourth of July on the Grand Strand. Whether you're spending the day on the beach, grilling with family, or out on the boat, it always seems to end the same way—looking up at a fireworks show. One of my favorite things about living here is that you don't have to travel far to find one. From North Myrtle Beach all the way down to Georgetown, there are plenty of places to celebrate Independence Day, and many of the events are completely free.
