If you’ve been following along, you probably know that I love a good farmers market. A few weeks ago, I decided to turn one of my market trips into a little summer challenge: how much of an entire dinner could I make using ingredients I found there? I shared the process in a reel, and it ended up being such a fun way to shop, cook, and make an ordinary summer evening feel a little more special. It also got me thinking about why I enjoy farmers markets so much in the first place. It’s not necessarily about getting the lowest price—it’s about the experience, knowing where some of your food comes from, and supporting the people in our community who grow it.
Start With What’s in Season
One of my favorite things about shopping at a farmers market is that it changes with the season. Instead of starting with a recipe and then searching for every ingredient, I like the idea of seeing what’s available and building a meal around it. In the summer, that means fresh tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, corn, peaches, and so many other fruits and vegetables that are at their best right now.
It also makes cooking feel a little more creative. You don’t need an elaborate recipe when your ingredients are fresh and flavorful. Sometimes a little seasoning, a hot grill, and a table full of people you love are all you need.
What’s on the Menu?
The final meal was basically summer on a plate: cheeseburgers, grilled vegetables, pasta salad, corn on the cob, and peach cobbler for dessert. I loved that almost every part of the meal came from something I had picked out at the market that morning. It made the cooking feel a little more intentional, and there was something really satisfying about sitting down to dinner knowing that I had supported local farmers while putting the meal together.
Is the Farmers Market More Expensive?
I’ll be honest: shopping at the farmers market isn’t necessarily going to be the cheapest way to feed your family. Depending on what you’re buying and where you shop, you may find some items for more than you would at the grocery store. But I don’t think the value of a farmers market experience can always be measured by the price tag.
When I shop at a farmers market, I’m not just buying groceries. I’m supporting the person who grew them, spending time in my community, and getting ingredients that are fresh and seasonal. For me, that’s part of the experience and part of the reason I enjoy going.
Make It a Summer Activity
If you’re looking for something to do before summer comes to an end, make a farmers market trip part of your weekend plans. Grab a coffee, walk around, talk to the vendors, pick out a few things that look good, and then take them home and make dinner together. You don’t have to buy everything at the market or plan an elaborate meal. Even picking up a few ingredients and incorporating them into what you already have at home can be a fun way to shop local.
That’s what I enjoy most about farmers markets. They’re not just somewhere to buy groceries. They give you a reason to slow down, try something new, meet local farmers and vendors, and turn an ordinary Saturday morning into part of your weekend.
Support Local, Eat Well, Enjoy Summer
At the end of the day, my farmers market dinner probably wasn’t the cheapest meal I’ve ever made, but it was one of the most fun. I got to support local farmers, cook with fresh ingredients, spend time in the kitchen, and enjoy a meal that felt like summer from beginning to end.
We spend a lot of time looking for ways to save money, and I think there’s also value in being intentional about where we choose to spend it. Shopping local may cost a little more in some cases, but knowing that you’re supporting the farmers, growers, and small businesses in your own community makes that purchase feel a little different.
So before summer slips away, grab a reusable shopping bag and head to your local farmers market. Pick out whatever looks good, bring it home, and make a meal out of it. You might spend a little more than you would at the grocery store, but you’ll get an experience—and maybe a new favorite summer meal—along with it. ☀️🍅🌽🍑
