Memorial Day Weekend on the Grand Strand: Affordable Ways to Kick Off Summer

Posted by Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union on May 18, 2026 2:35:49 PM

Memorial Day Weekend always feels like the real beginning of summer around the Grand Strand. The beaches get busier, restaurants start filling up, live music pops up everywhere, and suddenly everyone is ready to be outside again. One of my favorite things about this weekend is that there’s actually so much to do that doesn’t require spending a fortune. Between community events, local concerts, markets, and simply enjoying where we live, it’s pretty easy to have a fun weekend without turning it into an expensive one.

Memorial Day Events & Military Appreciation Days

One of the most meaningful parts of the weekend is the Military Appreciation Days events happening throughout the Myrtle Beach area. The weekend includes memorial ceremonies, community gatherings, and the annual Veterans March along Ocean Boulevard on Memorial Day morning. These events are centered around honoring veterans and military families and are completely free to attend.

Free Live Music & Summer Atmosphere

If you’re looking for a relaxed summer night out, there are several great free music options happening around the Grand Strand this time of year.

In Conway, Groovin’ on the Green has become one of the best spring traditions, with free Friday night concerts downtown throughout May. People bring lawn chairs and blankets, grab dinner nearby, and just enjoy being outside together. It’s one of those events that feels very community-centered and easy to enjoy.

Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach also both have live entertainment, outdoor music, and that classic busy summer atmosphere all weekend long. Even if you’re just walking around with an ice cream or listening to music for a while, it still feels like a fun night out without needing a big plan or budget.

Farmers Markets & Local Shopping

Memorial Day weekend is also when farmers market season really starts feeling like it’s in full swing around the Grand Strand. Markets are full of local produce, baked goods, flowers, coffee, handmade items, and small businesses, and honestly, even just walking through them feels like a good way to spend a slow morning. It’s one of the easiest ways to support local while still keeping things affordable.

Murrells Inlet Weekend Plans

Murrells Inlet is always a good idea over Memorial Day Weekend, especially if you’re looking for something a little more laid back. Between the MarshWalk, waterfront restaurants, local live music, and evening walks along the inlet, it’s one of the easiest places to spend an afternoon or evening without overspending. A lot of restaurants and bars along the MarshWalk feature free live music throughout the weekend, so you can easily make an evening out of simply being there.

Don’t Overlook the Simple Things

Honestly, one of the best parts about living here is that some of the best summer activities are completely free. A beach day, sunset walk, picnic, or grabbing takeout and sitting near the water still counts as a perfect summer evening. It’s easy to feel pressure to constantly spend money during holiday weekends, but some of the best memories are usually made doing the simplest things.

Memorial Day Weekend is such a good reminder that enjoying your summer doesn’t have to mean overspending. There are so many ways to enjoy the Grand Strand this time of year that revolve around community, time with people you care about, and simply appreciating where we live.

Because at the end of the day, the best summer weekends usually aren’t the most expensive ones—they’re the ones where you actually slowed down enough to enjoy them.
