May has a way of filling up quickly. One minute your calendar feels manageable, and the next it’s packed with events, travel, and celebrations. This year alone, I’ve got a Kentucky Derby party, the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, my sister’s physical therapy school graduation, travel for Mother’s Day, and the CAF Gala—all things I’m genuinely excited about, but all things that come with a cost. And that’s the part we don’t always talk about: how quickly a “fun” month can also become an expensive one.
What makes May feel expensive isn’t usually one major purchase—it’s the layering of smaller ones. Tickets, outfits, gifts, meals out, travel costs, last-minute add-ons. Each one feels reasonable on its own, but together they can stretch your budget more than you expected. It’s easy to say yes to everything in the moment without fully realizing what it adds up to.
There’s also a social element that comes with a busy season like this. You want to show up, celebrate people you care about, and enjoy the experiences. None of that is wrong—in fact, it’s what makes this time of year meaningful. But without a little intention, it can turn into overcommitting both your time and your money.
The goal isn’t to scale everything back or say no to the things you’re excited about. It’s simply to plan ahead. Looking at your calendar for the month and estimating costs—travel, gifts, tickets, and even dining out—can give you a clearer picture of what you’re working with. From there, you can decide where you want to spend a little more and where you might want to keep things simple.
Not every event has to be done at the same level. You might go all out for a milestone celebration, while keeping another weekend more low-key. Giving yourself permission to prioritize helps you stay present and enjoy what you’re doing, rather than feeling stretched thin trying to do everything the same way.
May is meant to be enjoyed. It’s full of moments worth celebrating, people worth showing up for, and experiences you’ll remember. The key is making sure your spending aligns with what matters most to you, so you can enjoy it all without the financial stress that sometimes follows.
Because a full calendar should feel exciting—not overwhelming. 💛
